The Medieval Times




Introduction


Hear Ye!!  Hear Ye!!

Step into the world of knights and castles, lords and ladies, Robin Hood and King Arthur! What was it really like to live in the Medieval times? As we conclude the unit on the Medieval Period, you will be transported back in time. You will become familiar with Medieval life.  Do you have what it takes?






Enter the Middle Ages, a world of queens and serfs, kings and clergy, nobles and pages.    Each of you will be assigned an aspects of the Middle Ages.  You will describe the role of specific member of medieval society and their place in the social hierarchy.  You will investigate the lives and realms of the people listed.   Choose a realm of society and create a PowerPoint reflecting a day in the life of that person.





To begin, you will need to do the following:

·        Research a realm of society in the Middle Ages
·        Prepare and deliver a presentation over that realm

Task 1 – The Research

·        Students will examine the following list of society members
o   Realm of religion
o   Noble’s realm
o   Knight’s realm
o   Merchant/Artisan’s realm
o   Peasant’s realm
·        Each student will locate and record information about their designated realm of people.
·        Use the “Research Guidelines” to discover the topics to be researched for each realm.
·        Guidelines have been listed to assist you, but record any information that you feel is important or especially interesting.
·        Each of you will develop a character within that realm and complete a Character Worksheet


Task 2 – Completing Your Presentation

·        Your PowerPoint presentation should be at least 6 slides in length.  The specific content of the slides is based upon your realm of society.  (See Research Guidelines)
·        Follow these basic rules of PowerPoint:
o   Rule of 7 – less than 7 lines per slide and 7 words per line
o   Keep it simple and organized
o   Use at least 24 point font
o   Avoid “elegant” or “curly” font type
o   Keep all design templates or background schemes the same
o   Use darker backgrounds with lighter colored fonts and lighter backgrounds with darker colored fonts.





Each realm of society has specific guidelines and questions to be researched and included in your PowerPoint presentations.  To find your guidelines, click on your given realm.

§  What was considered proper etiquette for the medieval period?
§  Name 5 popular festivals or feasts.  What was usually being celebrated?
§  What kinds of activities did Medieval people participate in at a festival?  Feast?
o   Find 3 recipes for our festival.
o   Make a display showing your written recipes in the authentic and in the modern versions.  Be sure to illustrate your display.
o   You will need to teach us an authentic game or dance that you have discovered in your research for entertainment at the feast.

Roles 


Role : The Lord.
The Lord: The Lord’s role was to support the king, and act as the leader.

Role: The King.
The King – The King was a rule of a Kingdom.

Role: The Lady.
The Lady- The Lady’s role was to manage the castle community of family and servants.

Role: The Lady-in-waiting.
The Lady-in-waiting – The Lady-in-waiting was a woman from a noble family, who served another noble lady as a companion or helper.

Role: The Royal Child.
The Royal Child-  The Royal Children were the sons and daughters of the King and Queen. The sons were Princes and the daughters were Princesses.

Role: The Squire.
The Squire- The Squire was a noble youth who was training to be a knight.

Role: The Knight.
The Knight – A knight was a warrior who fought on horseback. He promised loyalty and service to his Lord and to the King.

Role : The Blacksmith
The Blacksmith – The Blacksmith was a craftsperson whomade tools and metal objects as well as shoed the horses.

Role: The Armorer.
The Armorer – The Armorer made and repaired weapons, armor, locks , keys and other metal objects.

Role: The Priest.
The Priest- The Priest was a religious leader who lead services in  the chapel and helped to tutor the children.

Role: The weaver.
The Weaver- The Weaver was a craftsperson who made cloth from thread.

Role: The Merchant.
The Merchant – The merchant was a business person who bought, sold and traded goods.

Role : The Healer.
The Healer – The healer used herbal remedies to help sick or injured persons.

Role : The Town Crier.
The Town Crier – The Town Crier called out the news of the day, including Royal proclamations, such as changes to a law or to tax.

Role : The Reeve.
The Reeve- The Reeve was a villager who organized village work and acted as a foreman.
